Adam Guest Speaker at Victims Support Group

Today, Adam from our office attended the “Victim’s Support Group Forum”, held at Canley Vale Leisure Centre, Canley Vale.

In attendance were hundreds local residents of Cabramatta, Canley Vale and Fairfield areas to learn about rights and access to justice for those who are victims of domestic violence. The majority of the attendees were those of a Vietnamese background, who arrived recently to Australia. Adam is proudly of Vietnamese background, born in Vietnam and coming to Australia as a boat person.

Adam presented as one of the forum’s guest speakers, discussing and answering questions on the following topics:

  • Apprehended Domestic Violence Orders,
  1.             How to apply for an AVO through the courts,
  2.             How to apply for an AVO through the local Police Station,
  3.             The court process for AVO proceedings.
  • Victim’s support services,
  • Property Settlements,
  1. Negotiations with your ex partner,
  2. Consent orders,
  3. Contributions,
  4. Settling outside court,
  5. Filing proceedings in court.

It was a real pleasure to be giving back to the community in this way.

As criminal lawyers, we sometimes lose sight of the plight of victim’s of domestic violence. Everyday we defend those who are accused to domestic violence, so at time it is difficult for us to see the other side.

Thanks Thi and Huynh Case Workers from SHLV- Liverpool Fairfield (Staying Home Leaving Violence) for inviting us, and for a really nice lunch!
