Appeals to the NSW Court of Criminal Appeal are heard in circumstances where the Accused or the Crown appeal the decision of a District Court of NSW.

There are two types of appeal, an appeal against the sentence handed down by the District Court Judge, or an Appeal against conviction. The appealing party can choose pursue both the Sentence handed down and the Conviction (often called an all grounds appeal).

Appeals to the NSW Court of Criminal Appeal are complex, and very often involve obscure issues of law. Senior Barristers are often briefed by solicitors to appear in the CCA, where matters are heard before Supreme Court judges (usually comprising of 3 judges).
