The story of Ngoc Tram Nguyen is sentimental, starting from her arrival in Australia as an infant refugee to the tragic accident causing her demise. Later Ngoc Tram met the Dean of the Faculty of Law, Professor David Dixon, as he was conducting research on policing in Cabramatta. Ngoc Tram surprised Professor Dixon with her level of intellect and later became his research assistant, co-authoring a report. After being encouraged by Professor Dixon, Ngoc Tram attended the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in the hope of becoming a lawyer to, “help my friends and community someday.” Sadly she passed away before she was able to fulfill her dream.
LY Lawyers had the great honour and privilege to be allowed to sponsor the Ngoc Tram Nguyen Scholarship of UNSW. This scholarship allows disadvantaged young people to achieve their potential at the UNSW Law School. Every year it is awarded to a student from a non-selective public secondary school in the south west area of Sydney. The recipient of the scholarship receives $5,000 per year for the duration of their undergraduate law degree.
LY Lawyers sponsored Hoxton Park High School at the scholarship event, providing them with information and knowledge about what it is to become a lawyer. The night was filled with laughter and sadness as guest speakers recalled their memories of Ngoc Tram, drinks were poured, games were won and performances entertained. It was a great night to network with fellow lawyers working in different areas of the law and inform young minds about the prospect of becoming a lawyer.
Overall the event was a success as enough money was raised to allow two recipients to receive the Ngoc Tram Nguyen Scholarship, Victor Lam and Natalia Brkic. We at LY Lawyers would like to congratulate them both and hope they will become amazing lawyers in the future.
